The U Turn: A Guide To Happiness (2013) by Conor Farren is a wonderful self-help book.
The idea behind the book is to help the reader with ways to ensure that your mental health is better so that you can live a more fulfilled life and is for anyone from people going through depression and anxiety to people with good mental health as we are all capable of doubting and feeling low in our self-esteem at different times and in varying degrees.
Like many life advice books, there was things I agreed with and things I didn’t. But also like many life advice books, I learned a lot and found it incredibly thought-provoking in a lot of ways. The tone of the book is very conversational and the medical jargon is well-explained. Really, really interesting. I love the way it’s called a guide because that leaves the reader space to create their own versions of themselves from the advice as opposed to saying Instructional Manual or something. With the book being written in 2013, it looks at things mostly in a modern context but there was still a few little bits here and there that could have been changed a slight bit to fit our new world. But given Farren his due, it wasn’t very often.
I found the case studies and Farren’s own experiences particularly interesting. Some were sad, some were happy, some had bits of both, some just were. These case studies were very well woven into the concepts being discussed and there was great activities to make one think. At the end of the book there is also a further reading section and a very helpful list of contacts for anyone suffering which could be any of us at any given time.
A great book with an effortless flow which was divided into the chapters very well.

My new book The ‘Troublemaker’ Personality is now available to buy on Amazon and Payhip.
This is my first self-help book. It is about being opinionated and suffering mental health issues due to prejudice/ignorance married in with gaslighting. The book is very much written from a personal perspective as I have went through the things I’m talking about in it. I still obviously face a lot of negativity but my mental health is grand now. And that was the idea behind the book, to maybe help even one person out there who might be struggling and maybe they won’t feel as down in and about themself. We speak a lot about mental health and prejudice in the world but we don’t always talk about it very often with an emphasis on this personality type and that can be a source of a lot of peoples’ problems from my experience.
I have most definitely in the past spoke about these issues in my past books but never apart from my poetry a little bit, I have never written it as me talking about it and there is something even more frightening but certainly even more liberating too. I never really thought about writing a self-help book before but once the idea took hold, I was determined to do it.
I hope the book will be helpful to people and for everyone else, an interesting read.
