Poem: Love To You Dad

Today it is 13 years since my father passed away. This poem is for him. Rest in peace Dad, love you.

I hate seeing this date on anything each year,

hate seeing it on anything leading up to the day,

we miss you and we love you,

you were a father who supported, encouraged and loved,

a father with a quick sense of humour,

that Dublin wit,

a comeback always available,

you watched the postman all around the site

through the window until he brought my first Social Welfare check,

you were excited when I did the Lotto for the first time,

you encouraged me to go for things and believed in me in a lot of ways

long before I believed in myself in those aspects,

you fought for your rights and our rights when needed,

you were gentle and always made sure we were happy,

giving Mum a little cone from the bottom of the ice-cream

because as a diabetic it’s all she could eat is so cute,

you set me up quite beautifully for the world really,

sometimes be gentle,

sometimes be strong

and sometimes just laugh.

We love you Dad,

love from Mum, Sharon and I,

we are thinking of you today,

rest in peace.
