Austria’s Conchita Wurst has won the 59th Eurovision Song Contest with her song Rise Like A Phoenix scoring 290 points in Denmark’s Copenhagen last night.
The fabulous Conchita had a battle on her hands with runners-up The Netherlands and their entry The Common Linnets’ Calm After The Storm who ended on 238 points but in the end it was the super talented – and super stylish – Conchita Wurst who took the title.
Conchita, whose real name is Thomas Neuwirth, ended Austria’s 48 year losing streak at the contest with powerhouse vocals in the style of Adele and Shirley Bassey and a song with amazing lyrics and a James Bond feel.
On the night – and in Thurday night’s semi where she qualified in first place – Conchita wore a stunning gold embellished dress and won on both occasions despite not getting the best draws to sing in.
After winning a clearly shocked 25-year-old Conchita said,
“This is dedicated to everyone who believes in a future of peace and freedom. We are unity and we are unstoppable.”
I am absolutely delighted for Conchita. She completely deserved it. Everything was perfect. The song, her vocals, that amazing dress and she comes across really lovely, genuine and down-to-earth. Congratulations Conchita! 🙂
