Director Dexter Fletcher has left the Freddie Mercury biopic over creative differences with producer Graham King. Mercury has went into “soft pre-production” and is set to start filming this summer.
The film will star Emmy-winning actor Ben Whishaw as the late Freddie Mercury.
Variety says: ‘Sources say they were some back and forth not just with (Graham) King and Fletcher but Whishaw who also wanted changes made to the script and that these changes were taking to long to fix and eventually led to King letting Fletcher go.’
Whishaw took over from Sacha Baron Cohen was reported to have left due to similar reasons to Fletcher. However Mercury’s fellow Queen band member Brian May said these reports were “sensationalist”.
The film Mercury is now in “Pre-production” and is due to start filming this summer. King hopes to have a new director soon. However Variety has reported that the starting date may have to be changed so as not to clash with Whishaw’s work on the new Bond film.
